What You'll Learn: Building Culturally Responsive Care
Cultural competence goes beyond knowledge—it’s about applying awareness in ways that are ethical, reflective, and rooted in humility.
A key part of this is understanding the difference between cultural competence and cultural humility. While competence focuses on building skills and knowledge, humility centers the ongoing process of self-awareness, curiosity, and respect in clinical and community interactions.
These resources explore how mental health care can better serve marginalized communities by addressing the structural and cultural barriers they often face. This includes examining the impact of stigma, systemic discrimination, and cultural misalignment—factors that can make care feel inaccessible or even unsafe.
You'll find guidance on tailoring interventions to honor clients’ cultural identities, values, and lived experiences, as well as strategies for adapting diagnostic and treatment frameworks to be more inclusive. Ethical practice in diverse care settings is also emphasized, along with practical steps clinicians and mental health workers can take to build trust and implement culturally responsive care in their daily work.
Explore the resources below to deepen your understanding and strengthen your practice. Each one offers research, frameworks, and tools designed to support culturally competent and community-informed mental health care.

Culture Clues is a series of tip sheets developed by the University of Washington Medical Center to help healthcare providers better understand the cultural values, beliefs, and practices of patients from diverse backgrounds. Each tip sheet offers quick, accessible insights into communication styles, decision-making preferences, and cultural considerations for specific ethnic and linguistic groups. These guides are especially useful for improving cross-cultural interactions in clinical settings and fostering patient-provider relationships built on trust and mutual understanding. This living guide aims to highlight resources on culturally sensitive care resources for UW care providers, educators, and researchers. Within this space, UW was previously known for the resource Culture Clues™, which was created and maintained by UW Medicine Patient and Family Education Services. This specific resource has since been discontinued.
